[INFO] StreetSoccer

Beitragvon Cwali » 25. Februar 2003, 22:23

Not really advertisement in this message, but I wanted to be the first to use [INFO]. :-)

I get many funny emails about StreetSoccer. One topic often is about an offensive
player in 1 of the 2 spaces in the 'penalty area' in front of the 2 spaces for the goal
(so not those 2 goal spaces where only the goalie may end it's turn!). The rules
say that your offensive player can be there, but some wonder if those spaces are
too powerfull. The 'house rule' we almost always used is that you may not start
with an offensive player there. But I found that one rule too much in the rulebook
about the startpositions. Further I sometimes tried the rule that, if you enter such
a field during the game, you must shift it one space outside the penalty area if you
stand there 3 turns unused and that player isn't the most close to the ball of all
your players. This rule can be used as tournament rule but you see that it's not a
nice description in a rulebook of such an easy game. :-)
I self don't think that those spaces are that powerfull in general, but I don't like the
tactics of (in Dutch:) "balletje afwachten" (in English "goal hanging"?). The
discussion reminds me to the discussions in the times I played StreetSoccer on
squares and grassfields self often, when an offensive player wanted to stay near
the opponent's goal all the time. (In contrast, in most indoor-soccer rules you
must hold at least one player on the opponent's side.)
I got a question about scoring by a diagonal shot which reminds me to those days
too with coats as goal posts, but that should not be a problem with the good goal
nets on the game board. :-)
Those goal nets became a point in the discussion about walking on the spaces
behind the goal and walking through the goal into the field. In most of the
prototypes the goals were smaller than 2 spaces to make it more comparable to
real meassurements, so using those spaces was clear, but now I changed the
size of the goals for the clearness. So 'climbing over the goals' is allowed, but I
didn't see that happen yet. By the way, you can do that that isn't allowed but then
anti-kill-joy rule 3 should prevent for blocking completely with the ball 'on' the goal
line (which is already in contrast to the intent of the anti-kill-joy-rules, for who read
rulebooks as a 'letter of intent').

Of course I got many emails about using cards instead of a die, but after a few
matches most players seem to get convinced about using the die. I think it is the
most tactical with simply a die and gives the game the best 'soccer feeling' and it
clearly is the most popular way, experienced during 20 years.

Ideas for play by email came up and I would like to do that but therefore we need
an independent die simulator. (Playing on internet I would like too.) So please
reply a website with a random die if you know one!

By the way, almost all emails about StreetSoccer come from other countries than
Germany. Outside Germany gamers suppose that StreetSoccer is 'the most
popular Cwali-game', inside Germany that seems to be ZooSim. Is not meant as
complaint, I hope the attention for the Cwali-games will be so much spread over
different games every year. :-)

Quite a long message (don't start about StreetSoccer to me if you don't have
much time), I hope it's clear,
Groeten,
Corné

Thanks!
I just tried the second one and my first die roll was a ... 3.
I will try a match this way. I wonder if I will miss the feeling of rolling the die self. People already feel disadvantaged sometimes if the opponent blocks the die to prevent for rolling over the edge of the table. :-)
And I surely will not trust the sever anymore if I get many bad 'die-rolls'.

Groeten,
Corné
