Scratch Game; 17 April Leiden

On the 17th of April there will be a special meeting of Spelgroep (boardgames group) Phoenix in Leiden, The Netherlands. This meeting is called Scratch Game.

In Scratch Game there will be four teams of five game-designers (both (semi-)pro's and newby's). Between 10.00AM and 8.00PM the teams will have to design a game from scratch. Well, not completely from scratch: we will give you a basic rule for the game (e.g. for each blue chip, you will receive two red chips), that has to be added to the game somewhere. The other concession we will do is that there is some "basic" material available to make a game design. Ravensburger was most willing to give us a complete box of great stuff. The things you'll need that aren't available in the box will have to be "arranged".

At 8.00 PM the teams will be reshuffeled and everybody becomes part of a new team. The new teams will receive the games that have been designed by the old teams. The new teams will do a playtest on the designed games. Together the teams will decide which game is the best Scratch Game design and the team of designers that makes the best design will win the Phoenix Scratch Game Award.

I am curious what surfaced from previous competitions. Or is this the first contest, a so called scratch of a contest :-)

Hello Siegfried,

The idea was launched a few weeks ago by one of the gamers associated with our gaming group. In my opinion it was a very unconventional idea, to have a game design competition that lasted ten hours. The idea to let the designers rate each others game is in my opinion a guarantee for big fun. So, we worked the idea out and named it Scratch Game.

Put some creative people together and just watch what is going to happen. Maybe the forthcoming Spiel des Jahres...?
