Dear people
sorry for writing this in English; I feel I must apologize for the extreme prices of mail-ordering Roads and Boats. The problem is that the game contains almost 3 kg of material; this means our postage costs are enormous.
Yes, we knew that their were enough people who were interested to make 500 copies; but 500 is an absolute minumum for producing a game. It is not a profitable business. To lower prices, we should be able to make 5000 or more. This would require an investment of about 200.000-250.000 DM (if we could more than half current costs), which is a LARGE investment. We just do not have that kind of money, being three people who just graduted from university. Besides, selling 30 copies tells you next to nothing about the possibilities to sell 5000--- for that, one needs distribution channels and marketing systems which we do not have at this point in time.
In short, the low number of copies and the amount of material in the game forces us to rise prices this high.
As for the `ideal' on our website: we tried for three years to produce relatively simple games in really cheap packaging, but reached only a limited number of collectors. Apparently, people really like high quality boxes and material, which, unfortunately, comes at a price. So we changed our strategy, and will have to change that website as well :-)
We're trying to make a 2500 print run of our next games in order to be able to sell them trough shops at a lower price. Please appreciate the fact that this is a rather scary business, we bet the only money we have on a game without knowing HOW we will sell these-- up till now, we've always been very succesful, but who knows, you might not like our games next year... we cannot afford a `miss' as big companies can...
Still, this does not help you if you want a cheap R&B. You could save on postage by teaming up and ordering two or more with a friend, or by picking them up in Arnhem or Borculo (Netherlands, near the German border). We'll also be in Essen next year.
Sorry, hope this helps!
Cheers,
Joris
